High potential and gifted education

Some students learn faster and more easily than others. These students may shine in creativity, thinking, leadership or sport.

At our school, we recognise and nurture these strengths early. We support advanced learners with great lessons and activities to help them grow and thrive.

Why choose us for your high potential or gifted child?

Recognising potential and developing talent

Our teachers find potential and nurture our students to be the best they can be.

Tailored lessons

Each student has different abilities. Teachers respond to each student’s ability by providing extra challenges and extension activities to keep learning exciting and engaging.

Rich opportunities and activities

Students can take part in opportunities to develop their talent in the arts, sport, leadership and more.

Opening doors to wider experiences

Our students can participate in a wide range of state-wide opportunities that aim to extend and enrich student potential.

What is high potential and gifted education?

High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.

We do this through:

Our high potential and gifted education opportunities

Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

In our classroom
  • High potential and gifted learners at our school will be challenged by a highly structured curriculum, delivered by expert teachers who can tailor the learning to suit the needs of individual students.

  • Classroom programs build physical and fundamental movement skills, promote healthy participation, and identify students with emerging talent and potential.

  • Every child has the chance to find their voice through our dedicated Public Speaking program. Students participate in explicit, engaging workshops that build confidence, clarity and communication skills. All students are given the opportunity to speak and flourish, with classroom presentations leading to our School Public Speaking Finals, where emerging speakers showcase their talents. Public Speaking at our school empowers learners to express themselves, think critically and step onto bigger stages with confidence.

  • We explicitly teach about emotions and use Daily Check ins. Teaching emotional vocabuary promotes self-awareness and responsible decision making. Checking in helps practise vulnerability, emotional reflection and compassion.

Across our school
  • Our students participate in a wide range of carnivals including swimming, athletics and cross country, with opportunity for higher level representation, team sports, Gala Days and development programs.

  • At our school, technology is thoughtfully integrated to create a personalised and engaging learning experience for every student. Each classroom features Sound Field systems to support clear communication and inclusive learning. With iPads in Kindergarten and 1:1 laptops for Years 1 to 6, students have individual access to devices that suit their stage and style of learning.

  • Our school offers a wide variety of playground areas designed to spark creativity, problem-solving and imaginative play. Students can explore natural construction zones, enjoy quiet moments in the library, engage in pretend play with the doll house, or get hands-on in the sand pit and dirt truck area. Every space is thoughtfully created to encourage curiosity, collaboration and critical thinking, making playtime a meaningful part of each child’s day.

  • We implement a whole school Socio-emotional Learning Program (SEL) to explicitly teach practical strategies to build healthy, resilient friendships and manage social emotional learning. It provides a common language and tools to navigate social situations, aiming to improve wellbeing and create a positive school culture. This supports all learners and develops potential in leadership and the socio-emotional domain.

Across NSW
  • The Premier’s Sporting Challenge (PSC) promotes whole-school participation in physical activity with leadership pathways and professional learning.

  • The Representative School Sport Pathway and PSSA events enable our students to trial and compete in sports at regional, state and national levels, fostering discipline, commitment and collaboration.

  • The Hunter Region Dance Festival and various Public Speaking competitions, provide opportunities to develop creative potential.

  • Participation in STEM challenge Days and the Newcastle Permanent Maths competition

  • Students plan, film and edit original works using professional equipment, with opportunities to enter Film By the Vines and develop creativity, teamwork and technical skills.

  • Opportunities to extend vocal talent, through the Hunter CCGPS Choir and perform at whole-school celebrations and events.
